Rainbow Flag Award at Bexhill Academy
Celebrating Diversity | Promoting Inclusion | Empowering Students
At Bexhill Academy, we are proud to be a Rainbow Flag Award school. The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework that focuses on positive LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus other related identities) inclusion and visibility in schools.
The award encourages a whole-school approach to celebrating diversity, challenging discrimination, and ensuring that every student feels seen, supported, and safe. It reflects our commitment to creating a school culture rooted in kindness, respect and opportunity for all.
Information for Students
We know that exploring sexuality and gender identity can be a positive experience for many young people, but we also recognise that it can come with challenges. At Bexhill Academy, we are here to support every student—no matter their journey.
Common challenges some LGBTQ+ young people face can include:
-
Coming out to family and friends
-
Pressures around labelling their identity
-
Experiences of discrimination or exclusion
-
Feelings of guilt or fear around self-acceptance
-
Concerns about mental health or wellbeing
Support at School
Our LGBTQ+ students are a valued and visible part of the Bexhill Academy community. If you’re looking for someone to talk to, need a quiet space, or want support from a staff ally, there are safe spaces around the school clearly marked with signs. Pastoral managers and all year team staff are trained and ready to support you.
No student should ever feel alone. Every young person deserves to feel confident and respected at school.

Celebrating LGBTQ+ Life
Throughout the year, we celebrate the vibrancy and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community through events and awareness campaigns, including:
-
LGBTQ+ History Month – Learning about the lives and contributions of LGBTQ+ people throughout history
-
Pride Month – Celebrating identity, courage and the ongoing fight for equality
As one of our students said:
“Young people spend most of their childhood being at school, so knowing you come to a safe place for most of the day is everything.”
Together, we are building a school where everyone belongs.
