Miss Baker's Year 7 Art Classes

This year we have covered several areas such as:

-Beginning of year assessment -Observational drawings of shells

-Peace Poster

-Hundertwasser

-Abstract Portraiture

-Angie Lewinand printmaking based on flowers

-Shoes

-End of year assessment- two hour silent drawing of their shoe using tone and shade.

I feel it is very important for all of my students to begin and understand the process and techniques of using a range of different materials. They have also been learning about how to present all of their work in the same way that we do in GCSE Art and Design. This has been done through embedding new language and key knowledge within my lesson planning. A crucial part of GCSE Art is being able to draw from real life objects. This has been a steep learning curve but all of my Year 7 students have really worked well.

Homework’s are set once a term at the beginning. I have combined two homeworks into one which equates to one hour. This is proven to be successful as students have taken real care and have got very involved.

- Students (Everyone in my opinion can be Apex) have the choice of doing slightly different tasks by increasing the level of challenge. They have been learning about how to annotate and deepen their language through key words. They are trained up on how to use the placemats on the desks so they become more independent.

Miss Baker's Year 9 and 10 Art Classes

Course Layout:  60% Coursework/40% Exam

This year we have covered two major units which are:

-Natural Form - project with final piece 20%

-Identity - project with final piece 20%

-Decay - techniques and skills based.

Students in Miss Baker’s classes are currently just starting on their Decay project. We are exploring and experimenting with lots of different materials to create exciting effective movements of the ocean. We will then be doing some observational drawings of the pier in Eastbourne and Hastings. This is inspired by the artist link Sheena Bourn. This is very exciting as she was also my GCSE Art Teacher. We are hoping she is able to accept my invitation to come in to give a workshop on her excellent skills. Students will all be then working on their final piece over the Summer Holidays.

Students have just completed a major project on ‘Identity’ which was based on portraiture looking at a range of different abstract artists. This was then developed by students creating four ideas for a final piece based on linking two different artists and putting their own personal stamp on this.

- Students have been very independent and have taken on their own learning by choosing and exploring their own choice of artists. Also they have taken their own direction of learning and have produced some very personal sensitive work.

- Students (Everyone in my opinion can be Apex) have the choice of doing slightly different tasks by increasing the level of challenge. They have been learning about how to annotate and deepen their language through key words. I train them up on how to use the placemats on the desks which is a new source that I have made for my art room, so they become more independent.

Excellent work team Year 9 and 10 - so proud of you….. keep it up……

HOMEWORK- Students are encouraged to create one double page in their sketchbook per week, which is set and collected in on a weekly basis. This will usually link in with what we are currently working on in class. We are also developing and extending observational drawings which are a crucial part to play in the GCSE Art criteria.

Students create the same work but personalise this in their own style using independence from other sources of ideas and inspiration.
